W.R.Mitchell Archive

For more than 60 years, the journalist W.R. Mitchell recorded interviews with Yorkshire legends like Kit Calvert and Hannah Hauxwell as well as working people like farriers and ‘in-between’ maids.

These recordings provide a fascinating insight into life in the Dales, through the stories of local Dales folk told in their own words and dialects.

In 2012 local arts & heritage charity Settle Stories received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for the W.R. Mitchell Pilot Project. This digitised a selection of Bill’s collection of cassette tapes.

The W.R.M Archive is now live and ready for you to explore wherever you are in the world.
